Huntersville, the first Lake Norman town north of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, was renamed from Craighead to Huntersville in honor of major landowner and cotton farmer Robert Boston Hunter. The town officially incorporated in 1873. Fertile land and a rail line promoted quick growth. Even before Huntersville was established as a municipality and named for one of its founding fathers, steam engines carried passengers on rails that still run parallel to N.C. 115. Farmers grew cotton on their large plantations and prominent schools attracted families from near and far. In later years, textile mills brought more jobs and residents to the area. As the town grew larger, so too did its business community. The Virgin Manufacturing Company, a cotton mill, encouraged the development of Huntersville’s “mill town” on the east side of the railroad tracks. It is the sense of Huntersville’s past that has brought so many new residents to this town. The allure of the remaining farmland, the simple commute into the city of Charlotte and the proximity to the relatively new Lake Norman are just some of Huntersville’s enticements http://huntersville.org/Departments/Planning/HistoricPreservation.aspx http://www.huntersville.org/AboutHuntersville/UpcomingEvents.aspx http://www.huntersville.org/Portals/0/Residents/residents%20-%20update.pdf (residence guide) http://www.huntersville.org/

In the past decade or so, Charlotte has been sprouting skyscrapers, including the 40-story, trapezoidal steel-and-glass tower of the Bank of America Plaza and the stunning 46-story Hearst Tower, which was completed in 2002. Suburban districts have mushroomed, with landscaped housing developments and enormous shopping malls springing up in every direction. Concord's history dates back over 200 years. Back in the late 1700's, it seems there was a disagreement between the German and Scots-Irish settlements in the area over exactly where the County seat of the newly formed county of Cabarrus should be located. A compromise was eventually reached, and the new city was founded in 1796 on a 26 acre site. The city was named Concord, meaning "harmony," to reflect the spirit in which the issue was settled. When you look at Concord today and see the wonderful mixture of progress and heritage, the perfect blend of business, industrial, and residential life, you can see that Concord still embodies the meaning of its name - "harmony." Located just a short drive from Charlotte, Historic Downtown Concord is conveniently located less than five miles off Interstate 85.
