A
Lake Norman Experience
Lake
Norman, by the numbers, is 34 miles long, has 520 miles of shoreline,
is 120 feet deep at it deepest point and covers a surface area of
more than 32,500 acres. It was created in the early 1960's by Duke
Power to provide electricity for the growing piedmont region. The
energy provided by the McGuire Nuclear Station and Marshall Steam
Station is more than 4,200 kilowatts and serves 2,000,000 Carolinians.
The lake water provides 24,000,000 gallons of purified water for
domestic use daily.
In
the early days, the new lake was used almost exclusively by "weekenders".
Camping trailers, mobile homes, and cabins sparsely dotted the shoreline.
Today, the lake has become a place to live, work, and play. The
counties surrounding Lake Norman are among the fastest growing in
the state.
Lake
Norman, by heart, is a sailboat gliding leisurely across crystal
blue green water, a parasailer floating overhead in a Carolina blue
sky and a jet ski thrill ride across bumpy wakes on sunny summer
weekend afternoons. It is a playground for boaters, anglers, and
sunbathers. Waterfowl such as mallards, wood ducks, teal, osprey
and herons are always at home here. Seven incredible sunsets most
every week will rival any you've seen in the world.
Lake
Norman
is waiting for you!
